A pet-food package has several jobs. It must provide required information, explain how to use the product and persuade you to buy it. Those purposes can compete for your attention, which is why the biggest words on the front are not always the most useful ones.

You do not need to decode every claim to make a thoughtful comparison. Start with the nutritional adequacy statement, species and life stage. Then review calorie content, feeding directions, guaranteed analysis and ingredients in context.
