Help Lead a Successful Store Team

The Assistant Store Manager partners with the Store Manager to provide consistent daily leadership and maintain a welcoming, organized, and well-run store.

In this role, you will supervise team members, support training, oversee operational priorities, and serve as Manager-on-Duty when the Store Manager is not present. You will help ensure that customers receive excellent service and that the team consistently executes Paws on Chicon’s standards.

Your Mission

Support the Store Manager by leading consistent daily execution, developing team members, and keeping the store customer-ready.

What You’ll Do

You will help lead the store team, maintain operational standards, and support an exceptional customer experience.

Daily Leadership

  • Supervise team members during assigned shifts.
  • Serve as Manager-on-Duty when the Store Manager is not present.
  • Delegate tasks and communicate daily priorities.
  • Help maintain a productive, respectful, and accountable workplace.
  • Address immediate operational issues and escalate concerns appropriately.

Team Development

  • Support new-employee onboarding and training.
  • Coach team members on customer service and operational standards.
  • Provide clear direction and constructive feedback.
  • Help team members build confidence, knowledge, and consistency.

Inventory and Store Standards

  • Oversee inventory receiving and reconciliation.
  • Help maintain accurate, organized inventory.
  • Ensure shelves, displays, and backstock areas meet company standards.
  • Monitor store appearance and help keep the sales floor customer-ready.

Store Operations

  • Complete opening, closing, cash-handling, and end-of-day procedures.
  • Support the Store Manager with daily operational priorities.
  • Execute eCommerce deliveries when scheduled.
  • Help protect customer and employee safety and maintain basic store operations.

Customer Experience

  • Model friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive customer service.
  • Help customers find products that align with their stated goals and preferences.
  • Assist with service recovery and customer concerns within assigned authority.
  • Help create a welcoming environment for pets and their people.

Store Manager Support

  • Communicate operational concerns and team needs promptly.
  • Help execute store plans, procedures, and company priorities.
  • Maintain continuity when the Store Manager is away.
  • Develop the knowledge and judgment needed for future Store Manager opportunities.

Work Schedule

Our stores are open seven days a week and most holidays. Assistant Store Managers must be available to support the store across opening, closing, weekday, and weekend shifts.

  • Receiving and inventory-related shifts
  • Holiday shifts as required

Dependable weekend and holiday availability is required.

Physical Requirements

This is an active retail leadership position involving customer service, stocking, receiving, and movement throughout the store.

✓ Stand and walk for extended periods.

✓ Bend, kneel, squat, reach, and climb ladders.

✓ Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

✓ Stock merchandise and assist with deliveries.

✓ Work around dogs, cats, pet hair, and occasional pet-related messes.

✓ Safely navigate stockrooms and busy retail environments.

Role Responsibilities and Authority

The Assistant Store Manager provides important daily leadership but is not independently responsible for:

  • Final schedule approval
  • Final hiring or termination decisions
  • Payroll approval
  • Independent high-impact financial or vendor decisions
  • Issues that exceed company-defined authority and require escalation

Successful Assistant Store Managers consistently meet the following standards:

Daily store operations run smoothly and consistently.
Team members receive clear direction and support.
Customer-service standards are maintained.
Inventory receiving and reconciliation are completed accurately.
Opening, closing, and cash procedures are completed correctly.
Operational concerns are addressed or escalated promptly.
Store standards remain consistent when the Store Manager is absent.
The Assistant Store Manager demonstrates readiness for increased leadership responsibility.
